Chapter twenty-two

Agatha Shadewell, Present Day

Coming back to the present, Agatha stared around Clara’s guest room. She made no move to unpack. Old habits once again. Living out of a suitcase made for easy escape. She placed her carryall on the Empire dresser she had refinished for Clara, careful not to leave any scratches.

As she returned to the kitchen to see if she could help with dinner, her phone pinged.

Where R U? the message read, with the letters R and U standing in for the full words.

“It’s Echo,” Agatha informed her host. “Is it okay if I invite her over?”

“Sure,” Clara said. “I’ve got a ton of leftovers in the fridge that need eating. Maybe she’ll have some news about our case.”

Clara’s house was a couple of blocks from where Echo lived with her mom. Of course it was. Unless you lived out in the woods like Agatha, everything was just a couple of blocks away from everything else. Agatha loved her privacy, but she could see the advantage of proximity.

Echo arrived about ten minutes later, lugging with her a bike helmet and backpack, which, Agatha was sure, contained her laptop.

“Got your text. What’s up?” Echo said, plopping down on the sofa.

“I think that’s my line. I got your text.” Agatha held her phone up so Echo could read it.

“Right. I sent that one after I got one from you. I was poking around the cloud. Well Dark paid Grimthorpe International to carve out a chunk of one of their big servers so they could stash all their files. I’m digging for Cameron Crisp’s raw footage, but I’ve been through every folder I can access and still nothing. I did find some hidden files, but I can’t access them without the exact file names and password. Then I got your text, saying, ‘Come quick. I got something to tell you.’”

“But I didn’t text you.” Agatha could feel her eyebrows scrunching together. And her pulse quickened. “Show me.”

Echo hunched over her phone, flicking through screens. “That’s weird. It’s gone now.” She shrugged. “Must have been an old message. Happens sometimes.”

Agatha wasn’t so sure. This was the second time people had received texts she hadn’t sent. But she kept her concerns to herself, asking instead, “Did you and Jada get the murder book started?”

“Yeah, but it’s pretty thin at the moment.” Echo filled them in, explaining how they’d added links to videos of the crime scene. “Jada spent all day yesterday collecting footage. Literally everybody from the movie crew had their phone out, like they were getting bonus footage for the director’s cut.”

“To be expected, I guess,” Agatha said. “These are movie people, after all. Film is their life.”

“Right,” Echo said. “Lots of local peeps filmed, too. There’s hours of footage of the same few minutes. Jada said that’s good. We can look at the crime scene from every angle.” Echo paused, then added, “Any news on the case?”

“Nothing yet, but it’s only been a few hours since we were all together,” Agatha rubbed her eyes.
